Background
The Village of Oak Park’s Welcoming Village Ordinance prohibits the use of Village resources in Federal civil immigration enforcement. Peers, including the City of Evanston and Lake County, have passed similar resolutions prohibiting use of the property for these purposes, while other peers like the City of Chicago, Cook County, and the Circuit Court of Cook County have enacted executive orders with these prohibitions.
Regulations adopted by peers have also:
1. Prohibit the use of their respective owned and controlled parking lots, vacant lots, and garages for civil immigration enforcement.
2. Provide signage for their properties and private properties for display by private landowners and leaseholders who wish to state an intent to curtail civil immigration enforcement on their properties
3. Provide education materials to community members, businesses, organizations, and faith groups around "know your rights", and on how to document and report concerning activity.
