Overview

Overview

As requested by Trustee Enyia and President Scaman at the Village Board meeting on March 21, 2022, staff has prepared a motion to amend the Transportation Commission’s work plan to review the traffic calming petition for the 500 and 600 blocks of North Taylor and review this petition ahead of the backlog of other petitions due to concerns around recent crime in this area.  The 500 and 600 blocks of North Taylor submitted a traffic calming petition to the Village on March 2, 2022.  The petitions indicated concerns regarding the speed and volume of traffic on the blocks as well as safety concerns regarding crime.

Recommendation

Recommendation

Approve the Motion.

Fiscal Impact

The FY22 Budget includes funds for the traffic data collection and processing of traffic calming petitions through the Transportation Commission in the General Fund, Public Works - Engineering, Transportation, External Support for traffic studies for petitions account no. 1001-43700-723-530667.

Background

The 500 and 600 blocks of North Taylor submitted a traffic calming petition to the Village on March 2, 2022.  The petitions indicated concerns regarding the speed and volume of traffic on the blocks as well as safety concerns regarding crime.  The petition and letter from the residents describing their concerns are attached for reference.  Many of the concerns stated in the letter related to crime and impacts from the BP gas station at the northwest corner of Taylor and Lombard.

There currently is a backlog of over 20 traffic calming petitions due to COVID and vacancies in the Engineering Division which will take 2-3 years to get through with the Transportation Commission even with consultant support due to other work items for the Commission.  Pending Village Board concurrence to move this petition forward ahead of those already in the queue, staff would schedule traffic data collection for late April or early May and present this item to the commission for review, likely in June.
