Additional Information
In 1872, Julius Sterling Morton proposed the creation of a special day for planting trees to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture, leading to the first Arbor Day. Over one million trees were planted in Nebraska, and Arbor Day has since been observed nationally and globally, including in Illinois since 1887.
