Additional Information

Dr. Percy L. Julian was a pioneering chemist whose work led to the development of life-saving medications and more affordable treatments that continue to benefit millions of people worldwide. His achievements in science were matched by his resilience in the face of racial discrimination, including targeted violence against his family when they moved to Oak Park in 1950.

The Julian family’s decision to remain in their home despite these acts of hate helped challenge segregation and advance civil rights locally and nationally. Their East Avenue residence is recognized as a site of historical significance and a symbol of courage, perseverance, and progress.

Recognizing Dr. Percy L. Julian Day affirms the Village’s commitment to honoring its history, acknowledging past injustices, and continuing to build a more inclusive and equitable community.
