* The Village Board approved a similar alternate work schedule (12-hour Shifts) agreement last year on December 3, 2024 (RES 24-395).
Background
The current collective bargaining agreement allows for an 8-hour shift for patrol officers. The Village and the Union agreed that a schedule other than an 8-hour shift for a one-year period on a non-precedent setting basis is in the interest of both parties.
The Village and the Union reached a tentative agreement on the attached draft agreement. A 12-hour schedule is a better solution for the Village, given the staffing shortages, and the Union has a majority preference for a 12-hour schedule that offers more days off.
Timing Considerations
Both parties would like to approve the agreement as soon as possible in order for the Police Department to coordinate operational planning for next year, such as vacation schedules and other time-off approvals for the new year. Employees would like certainty regarding their work schedule next year.
