Additional Information

This proclamation recognizes Faith Julian and the enduring legacy of the Julian family in Oak Park, IL. Dr. Percy L. Julian, an internationally recognized chemist and civil rights pioneer and his wife Dr. Anna Roselle Julian helped shape the community’s history through their achievements and their determination to live in Oak Park, IL despite racist violence directed at their family and home in 1950. The historic Julian residence on East Avenue remains a powerful symbol of resilience, civil rights, and scientific achievement. As the last surviving member of the Julian family still residing in the home, Faith Julian has worked to preserve the property and the story it represents.
