The Village Board is asked to formally support the Obama Pledge and commit to the following steps: Review police use-of-force policies; Engage the community by including a diverse range of input, experiences and stories in the review; Report the findings of the review to the community and seek feedback; and Reform Oak Park's police use-of-force policies.

Background
The Obama Foundation Pledge is part of a national effort to address police violence and systemic racism by evaluating local police use-of-force policies.
By taking the pledge of the My Brother's Keeper Alliance at obama.org/mayor-pledge, Mayor Abu-Taleb has committed to the following steps:
* Review police use-of-force policies.
* Engage the community by including a diverse range of input, experiences and stories in the review.
* Report the findings of the review to the community and seek feedback.
* Reform Oak Park's police use-of-force policies.
The Oak Park Police Department values human dignity and human life. The examination of polices and the related training of officers in an important element of improving community policing in Oak Park. The steps identified in the Obama pledge can be a foundational guide for municipal government as it works in partnership with the community to discuss and establish changes in local law enforcement.
