Regular Village Board meetings are typically held at 7:00 p.m., the first three Tuesdays of each month in Council Chambers of Village Hall (room 201), 123 Madison St. When a Regular Meeting falls on a holiday, the meeting typically is held the following night. Overview

The purpose of this optional grant is to  provide programs to reduce teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS for 11 to 18 year olds in the Village of Oak Park.  The Health Department is recommending the Village Board approve this agreement.  This is a cost reimbursement grant agreement with the potential grant revenue of $27,701.

Fiscal Impact

This is a cost reimbursement grant agreement with a potential grant revenue of $27,701.  The grant will allow the Village to hire a contracted Public Health Specialist to perform the responsibilities and deliverables of this grant.  In addition, the Public Health Director, Health Department Administrative Assistant and Health Grants Coordinator will provide direct services which will be reimbursed through this agreement.

 

Background

The Illinois Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program is designed to support the implementation of direct services (evidence-based curriculum, work with multi-sector coalitions, positive youth development actitivies and parent education).  The Health Department has been a recipient of this grant for many years.  If awareded, the Health Department hires a Public Health Specialist to:

 

o                     Teach the “Draw the Line/Respect the Line” or similar evidence based/pre-approved curricula to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at St. Catherine/St. Lucy school.

o                     Create and manage a Teen Pregnancy Coalition

o                     Expand the Village’s partnership with the Illinois Collaboration on Youth

o                     Present the “How to Talk to Your Kids About Sex” to parent/professional organizations

o                     Present information on how to reduce risk sexual behaviors to high-risk adolescents

o                     Attend the annual IDPH Annual HIV/STD Conference

 

The term on this grant is from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017.

Alternatives

The Village Boad can delay this action and seek more information or not approve acceptance of this grant.  This is an optional grant from the IL Department of Public Health (certified health departments are not required to this activity).  Funding would be allocated from Oak Park to another agency who applied for the grant.
