Overview
The Engineering Division opened bids on September 29, 2016 for the Historic Sidewalk Repairs project. Five contractors received proposal documents and one bid was received. The lowest responsible bid being submitted by MYS, Inc., in an amount of $69,300.00. The contractor has agreed to reduce the project scope to fit within the budgeted amount of $25,000.

Fiscal Impact
The costs for this project would be funded through the FY 2016 Capital Improvement Fund account no. 3095-43780-101-570953 which provides $25,000 for the Historic Sidewalk Repairs project.
Background
The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) has been working since 2000 to develop a program to preserve Oak Park’s remaining sandstone sidewalks. The sidewalks, mostly installed between the 1890’s and 1902, are found in the central part of the Village and comprise many of the sidewalks in the Frank Lloyd Wright/Prairie School of Architecture and Ridgeland/Oak Park Historic Districts. Made of sandstone, the historic sidewalks provide a unique character to the historic districts not found in other Midwest communities, and also represent a considerable value to the village and its property owners.
This will be the first time for a dedicated program for the historic sidewalk. This inaugural year of the program will focus mainly on resetting sandstone sidewalks which present trip-hazards, as well as some relocation of pieces to create more contiguous sections of historic sidewalk. In the future the program is envisioned to also salvage the sidewalk in order to build an inventory so that in coming years the inventory can be used to relocate and fill in gaps that have been filled with concrete over the years, as well as using that inventory to replace deteriorated pieces. The Engineering Division also applied for an ITEP (Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program) grant in which selections will be announced this fall.
The lowest bid for this project was for $69,300 which exceeded the $25,000 amount budgeted for this work. The scope of the proposed project will be reduced to fit within the budgeted amount. As this being the inaugural program for this type of work, there was no similar work industry-wide to compare it to when determining the initial scope for the proposal.
