Overview
Overview
The purpose of this grant is to fund a comprehensive occupational medical program for the fire department consistant with the relevant National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1582.

Body
Staff Recommendation
Approve the Motion.

Fiscal Impact
If the grant is approved Oak Park's cost would be 10% matching funds of the total cost of $107,634, or $10,763 for the first year. In 2016 the annual physicals for the fire department cost approximately $13,000 from the HR budget.

Background
The National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) conducted an investigation of the 2016 Line of Duty Death of FF/PM Kenneth Harris. This investigation provided key recommendations for the Oak Park Fire Department which included: 1) Ensure that all firefighters receive an annual medical evaluation consistant with NFPA 1582; 2) Incorporate exercise stress tests into the medical evaluations for firefighters at increased risk for coronary heart disease; 3) Phase in a mandatory comprehensive Wellness/Fitness program for firefighters; 4) Perform an annual physical ability evaluation for firefighters. If awarded the grant, all the above recommendations could be accomplished. Stress tests would only be required for all firefighters the first year as a base record. After that, only those in the increased risk category would need them, reducing the annual cost of the program.
