Body
Staff Recommendation
Approve the Resolution.
Fiscal Impact
Staff estimates it will cost less than $1,500 to assemble and provide the DO NOT ENTER barricade to Irving School to deploy on Harvard Street to prohibit westbound Harvard Street between Cuyler and Ridgeland Avenues during arrival and dismissal time periods. There are available funds in the FY2018 General Fund, Public Works - Street Services, account no. 1001-43740-761-550634 for this work.
Background
In January 2018, the Village of Oak Park received phone calls from the principal of Irving School as well as parents of Irving School students. Both expressed concern regarding safety in the area of the school during arrival and dismissal time periods.
After observing drop-off and pick-up operations during the arrival and dismissal time periods, Village staff met with certain Irving School stakeholders to discuss their concerns, the issues observed and possible alternatives.
After a couple more iterations of staff observations and follow-up meetings, a neighborhood meeting to present the proposed transportation safety plan to parents and neighbors of Irving School occurred on Wednesday, June 6, 2018.
Next, the proposed Irving School transportation safety plan was presented to the Transportation Commission at its July 9, 2018 meeting. After listening to staff’s presentation and public testimony, the Commission deliberated and then made a series of recommendations to implement transportation safety plan.
Tonight the Village Board reviewed and acted upon the Transportation Commission’s recommendations on the proposed Irving School transportation safety plan.
Alternatives
Deny the Commission’s recommendation to allow Irving School to deploy a DO NOT ENTER barricade on Harvard Street during arrival and dismissal time periods and two way traffic would remain on Harvard Street between Cuyler and Ridgeland Avenues.
Previous Board Action
Tonight the Village Board of Trustees reviewed and acted upon the Transportation Commission’s recommendation to allow Irving School to deploy a DO NOT ENTER barricade on Harvard Street just west of Cuyler Avenue to prohibit westbound traffic on Harvard Street between Cuyler and Ridgeland Avenues.
