Background

The Farmers’ Market Commission voted at their November 14, 2018 meeting to submit a recommendation to the Village Board to amend Chapter 18 (“Peddlers and Solicitors”), Article 2 (“Farmers’ Market”) Section 18-2-2 (“Definitions”) of the Village Code to allow for the sale of frozen fish that was caught/captured outside the five state region of Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and/or Indiana.  The Farmers’ Market Commission is requesting that the Village Board direct staff to prepare the necessary ordinance in support of their recommendation.

The Farmers’ Market Commission and Farmers’ Market Manager have identified that customers are interested in the sale of fish at the Oak Park Farmers’ Market.  The Farmers’ Market Manager has searched for fish vendors from the five state region of Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and/or Indiana and found no available fish vendors.  In order to attract a fish vendor to apply for the Farmers’ Market, the Farmers’ Market Commission is recommending the ordinance be amended.  The Farmers’ Market Commission and staff have identified at least one fish vendor that uses sustainable practices and is family owned that is interested in applying to sell frozen fish at the Farmers’ Market, this fish vendor is located in Alaska.  Amending the ordinance would allow the Farmes’ Market Manager to pursue a fish vendor to sell at the farmers’ market.

Attached is the current Farmers’ Market ordinance.
