The rebuilding and reconfiguration of one Main Break service truck will cost $49,961.00.

Funds for necessary equipment such as cabin/workspace up fit, light bar, etc. will also come from this account but will be purchased separately from vendors who supply this equipment.

Background

This item is for the rebuilding and reconfiguring of the Public Works Department, Water & Sewer Division’s, Emergency Repair Service truck.  The truck is a 2000 Chevrolet Workhorse Step Van.  This vehicle is commonly referred to as the “Watermain Break Truck” since it is used primarily during these emergencies.  It has been used primarily in the winter since it offers the opportunity for workers to have a place to stay warm during emergencies repairs in cold weather.  The rebuilding and reconfiguring the inside of the truck will provide more opportunities to use it year round.

In lieu of replacing the truck due to it having low miles (10,000 miles) and hours of use but yet become more efficient in the storage of equipment and materials staff is recommending the rebuilding of the inside of the vehicle.  Water & Sewer Division staff has provided input into the rebuilding of the inside space.

The rebuilding will include a new air compressor, generator, work bench, compartment for maps, various compartments for storage of repair parts, tools and trench shoring.  Sauber Manufacturing Company was the original builder of this vehicle.

Each year, the Village allocates funds for the annual replacement of vehicles.  The Public Works Department manages the budget for vehicles that will replace those units having reached the end of their service life under the fleet replacement program.

This project budget comes out to $49,961.00 as opposed to approximately $120,000.00 for a vehicle replacement.
