Overview
The Village owns a sculpture called “The Gate” that was located near the Pier One store on Lake Street as part of the development of the new Maple Street. The sculpture was in need of repair and has been in storage. As part of the Village’s agreement with the Oak Park Area Arts Council (Arts Council), they are responsible to maintain the Village’s public art. The Arts Council contracted with the artist to repair the sculpture, however the Arts Council recommends placement of the repaired sculpture in a less high traffic/impact area such as Mills Park. The Village contacted the Park District to see if they were interested in locating this piece of art in Mills Park.

Fiscal Impact
Pursuant to the Village’s contract with the Arts Council - line item 1001.46260.233.585652.0000, $70,000 was budgeted for maintenance of the Village’s Public Art. The Arts Council has not expended any of these funds. The Arts Council has located the Artist and he is willing to repair and relocated the sculpture for an estimated $22,000.
The Park Distrcit is willing to relocate the sculpture to Mills Park, except for paying to relocate the art (move the art), but the Park District would maintain the art going forward.
Background
The Village purchased “The Gate” sometime in the early 2000s and the piece was installed near the Pier One store on Lake Street on a temporary base. The piece is failing in several areas. The Village moved the piece into storage at Public Works.
The Arts Council’s contract provides that they are to evaluate the Village’s art pieces and determine the maintenance needs of the pieces. The Arts Council was able to reach the original Artist who has agreed to restore the piece.
The Arts Council reviewed several different places for the piece and ultimately decided that the piece would be best in a garden setting. The Oak Park Park District has agreed to allow the sculpture to be installed in Mills Park and take over future maintenance of the sculpture. In the agreement, if in the future the Park District determines they do not wish to have the sculpture in Mills Park, the Village will have the first right to take it back and relocate it somewhere else.
Alternatives
1. Ask the Arts Council to continue to look for a Village owned location.
2. Opt not to repair and relocate the sculpture
