Overview

Overview

Oak Park I Housing Owner LLC is the developer for the affordable housing project located at 801 S. Oak Park Avenue. As part of their planned development ordinance, the developer is required to purchase and install a piece of public art near their project. Since their project does not have available free space, the developer is requesting to install the art piece in the public right of way near their new building. The Public Art easement allows for the installation of the art in the public right of way.

Background

On October 15, 2020, Village Board approved the Planned Development Ordinance for the development located at 801 S. Oak Park Ave. which is within the NC Neighborhood Commercial District, specifically the southwest corner of Oak Park Avenue and Van Buren Street. The subject site was a vacant gravel lot - a former gas station. The development consists of a modern-style, multiple use development with 35 apartment units, 2 live/work units, and commercial space on the ground floor with private parking behind.

As part of every planned development ordinance, the developer is required to present a plan to the Oak Park Area Arts Council for the addition of public art at or near the development site. The developer presented a plan for the installation of the “Peggy the Giraffe” sculpture that was part of the Village’s Sculpture Walk a few years ago and was very popular. The development site did not have space for the installation of the sculpture. The developer is requesting the installation of the sculpture on the Village parkway. The Oak Park Area Arts Council supports the piece and its placement. The developer is responsible for all costs to install and maintain the sculpture.
