Overview

Overview

Cook County recently announced a four-year, $5.5 million initiative to install up to 75 dual port public EV charging stations throughout suburban Cook County. The County is currently accepting suggestions via an interest form from municipalities, organizations, and businesses to install these stations throughout 2023-2024 after a robust community engagement process.

Recommendation

Recommendation

Adopt the Resolution.

Background

In the fall of 2022, Cook County announced $5.5 million in funding for the Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program, with the goal of increasing the number and access to public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout suburban Cook County. The goal of this four-year initiative is to install up to 75 dual port public EV charging stations, with Cook County covering the cost of the EV station hardware, construction, installation as well as networking and warranty fees for the first five (5) years.

Fiscal Impact

There is no fiscal impact from this Resolution except for the staff time that will be required to submit the interest form. If the Resolution is approved, Village staff will determine adequate sites for public EV charging stations and submit the interest form for the program.

DEI Impact

A goal of the program is to support communities where it is currently more difficult to charge an electric vehicle. Some of the barriers to charging include having few financial resources to install chargers and having less control over charging at home because of living in a multifamily dwelling unit where charging options could be limited. Because of these barriers, the County will prioritize the selection of communities that are:

1.)                     Under-resourced communities

2.)                     Areas with a higher density of renter-occupied housing

3.)                     Areas with a higher amount of multifamily dwelling units
