Background

This is a new grant opportunity from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

This grant will fund Oak Park Health Department’s efforts to provide influenza, MPV (monkeypox virus), and other recommended vaccines such as chicken pox, measles, mumps rubella, polio, hepatitis B, and RSV (when approved), in addition to COVID-19 vaccines, to communities facing health disparities and vulnerable populations.

During the years of the COVID pandemic, routine immunizations decreased on a population level, which can lead to an increased spread of communicable diseases, such as the flu, chickenpox, and measles. This grant will allow the department to proactively address this public health issue.

The Department is working to build our immunization program, one of the core tenets of public health services. Our department goals include expanding our nursing staff’s capacity to provide routine childhood vaccinations to Oak Park children and teens who are uninsured, underinsured, or in between or transitioning to new insurance providers so that they can attend local public schools, as required by law. This grant and associated activities also support the DEI and health equity goals of the department, including providing services to vulnerable populations, and increasing awareness and uptake of public health services, including immunization.

Fiscal Impact

This grant would provide funding for salaries, program expenses, training and supplies to deliver Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended vaccines to vulnerable populations in Oak Park.

DEI Impact

This grant supports efforts to bring needed vaccines to communities facing health disparities and vulnerable populations in Oak Park, including those under and uninsured. Outreach and education for populations who may need accurate, culturally-appropriate information about vaccines will be provided.
